1. Introduction
Melting tapering is to bundle two or more optical fibers together, and then melt and stretch them on the tapering machine, and monitor the changes in the splitting ratio in real time. When the splitting ratio meets the requirements, the melt stretching ends, and one end of the fiber remains(Cut off the rest)As the input terminal, the other end is used as a multi-channel output terminal. At present, the mature tapering process can only pull 1 at a time× 4 or less. 1× For devices above 4, use more than 1× 2 are connected together. It is packaged in a splitter box as a whole.
2. Production process
1.The main advantages are:
(1)The tapered coupler has more than 20 years of history and experience, and many equipment and processes only need to be used, and the development cost is only a few tenths or even a few percent of the PLC.
(2)The raw materials are easily available quartz substrates, optical fibers, heat-shrinkable tubes, stainless steel tubes and less glue, totaling no more than one dollar. And the investment and depreciation costs of machinery and instruments are less, 1× 2, 1× 4 low-channel splitters have low cost.
(3)The splitting ratio can be monitored in real time as required, and unequal splitters can be made.
2.The main disadvantages are:
(1)Loss is sensitive to the wavelength of light, and devices are generally selected according to the wavelength. This is a fatal flaw in the triple play process, because the optical signals transmitted in the triple play include 1310nm, 1490nm, 1550nm and other wavelength signals.
(2)The uniformity is poor, and the uniformity refers to the variation of the insertion loss of each output end of the splitter that splits the light equally. 1X4 nominal maximum difference is about 1.5dB, 1× The difference is greater than 8 times, which cannot ensure uniform light distribution, which may affect the overall transmission distance.
(3)Insertion loss varies greatly with temperature(TDL); Insertion loss refers to the ratio of the output optical power of a port to the optical power of the input end. Insertion loss is composed of two parts: one part is additional loss, the other part is splitting ratio factor; the splitting ratio of the device is different, the insertion loss is not the same, therefore; there is no specific regulation in the standard.
(4)Demultiplexer(Such as 1× 16, 1×32)The volume is relatively large, the reliability will be reduced, and the installation space will be limited.
